Precision gearboxes are a significant investment. With proper maintenance, a quality servo gearbox delivers 20,000 to 50,000 hours of reliable service. Neglecting maintenance dramatically shortens this lifespan and causes costly downtime. Here are the essential practices for keeping your gearboxes running at peak performance.

1. Proper Lubrication

Lubrication is the single most important factor in gearbox longevity. Use only the manufacturer-specified lubricant — typically synthetic polyalphaolefin (PAO) or polyglycol (PG) oil or grease. Check oil levels monthly and change per the schedule (every 2,000-5,000 hours or annually). In harsh environments with high temperatures or dust, change more frequently. Use the correct viscosity: too thin risks metal contact, too thick increases temperature and energy consumption.

2. Thermal Monitoring

Excessive heat is a leading cause of gearbox failure. Use temperature sensors or an infrared thermometer to monitor housing temperature during operation. A rise of more than 40°C above ambient signals a problem — insufficient lubrication, overloading, or misalignment. Most gearboxes operate at housing temperatures up to 90°C. Investigate immediately if temperatures consistently exceed this threshold.

3. Alignment and Vibration Monitoring

Motor-to-gearbox misalignment is a common cause of premature bearing failure and noise. Use a dial indicator or laser alignment tool to maintain parallel and angular alignment within 0.05 mm. Periodically check for unusual vibration using a vibration analyzer. Increased vibration often indicates bearing wear, gear damage, or loose mounting bolts.

4. Seal Inspection

Inspect shaft seals regularly for wear, cracking, or leakage. A failed seal allows lubricant to escape and contaminants to enter, rapidly accelerating wear. In washdown or high-dust environments, consider upgrading to double-lipped or labyrinth seals. Ensure breather vents are clear to prevent pressure buildup inside the gearbox.
